“INFLUENCING” versus “MANIPULATING”

26. January 2021

The choice to see another as either a person or an object is a choice between whether we will see and experience ourselves and others truthfully or erroneously.

The Arbinger Institute: Leadership and Self-Deception

In cross-functional processes like S&OP and IBP, we often talk about the importance of “INFLUENCING STAKEHOLDERS”. I felt some resistance when that topic was proposed for our IBSing pioneers meeting. I had an association with “MANIPULATING STAKEHOLDERS” – forcing one’s own agenda or functional priorities onto others.

Yesterday the following quotes have been provided by the S&OP and IBP experts about “HOW” to influence stakeholders:
– “listen empathetically to concerns”
– “show vulnerability”
– “ensure common understanding”
– “find common ground”
– “keep process simple”
– “offer myself as a support”
– “remain positive”
– “show genuine interest in learning”

Conclusion: “INFLUENCING STAKEHOLDERS” has nothing to do with “MANIPULATING STAKEHOLDERS” if it is done with the “RIGHT ATTITUDE” at an “EYE TO EYE LEVEL” and if we remain “OPEN FOR BEING INFLUENCED BY THE STAKEHOLDER IN RETURN” – it’s more about “CONNECTING WITH STAKEHOLDERS”
