The extermination of Yellowstone’s gray wolf provides an example of the consequences of a “𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘭” approach, where a change is imposed onto a complex system from outside.
𝑩𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒐𝒓𝒈𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒔𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 and 𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒍 𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒔𝒚𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒔 have a few things in common:
⇨ Complex systems are in a 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐨𝐮𝐬 state of 𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐱.
⇨ Cause and effect relationships are not clear in a complex environment, therefore it is 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭 how systems will react to change.
⇨ 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 are required to better understand how the system is responding to changes.
⇨ 𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 between the individual players determine how the system functions.
⇨ There is 𝐧𝐨 𝐨𝐦𝐧𝐢𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫 – everybody has a 𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺 in the current 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘹𝘵 of the system
